PERSONALITY: Known as the gym leader of Motostoke city, Kabu displays the sort of blazing spirit one would expect of a person who specializes in fire type Pokemon. As one of the older gym leaders in the Galar region, it'd be understandable to imagine that someone his age would probably take a more relaxed approach to the way they train and battle with their Pokemon, however for Kabu, that is definitely not the case. Many people known him as the sort of individual that places a lot of faith in the abilities of his Pokemon, but not only that, he does whatever he can to make sure not only their abilities continue to improve and remain strong, but he trains along with them as well. While appearing to be somewhere in his 50s, Kabu is always seen navigating about in a straight-backed quick jogging run, and has the sort of attire of someone that does a lot of physical activity, which proves true to how active he keeps to having a strict regimen of not only keeping himself fit but strengthening his Pokemon as well. One of the known training tactics that Kabu is said to use is by having his Pokemon battle water types in a nearby cave. Fire Pokemon's primary weakness is water, and so some would say that this would be a bit of a reckless decision to make, but Kabu understands clearly what it must take in order for him and his team to be prepared for any type of obstacle that could come there way when trainers come to challenge his gym, and it shows the degree of experience he has to not only decide upon such a risky training choice but be keenly aware of what his own weaknesses are as a trainer as well.
Originally from the region known as Hoenn, its said that Kabu proved to be a very skilled trainer that nearly had his chance to become a Champion himself quite a few times, however success never came to him. It was through this long arduous process that he developed his battling style and his over-all motto of doing anything no holds barred, expending all your resources and going all in with no mercy. This would be a reasonably good style for any trainer to take, but as you could expect, Kabu was shown to become very frustrated with the lack of success that he saw within himself. Even though Kabu has certainly grown beyond this style and appears far more confident with his experience, now knowing full well the sorts of things that do and don't work against varied opponents, he can still be seen with this spark of blazing enthusiasm and focus on attaining victory, though he's very willing to convey this feeling to other trainers. Kabu is the sort of person that on occasion, has a bit of a flare for putting on a show and being very vocal of his optimistic personality. When battling, Kabu can be seen giving vibrant commands to his Pokemon as they attack, and when the main character and Hop depart from Motostoke after defeating him, Kabu gives them a very loud shouted cheer which would probably be very motivating for a young child, but imagine having an old man yelling enthusiastically at the top of his lungs in the middle of a crowd? Kind of embarrassing.
While his liveliness may seem odd, and the ferocity of his optimism could appear intimidating, Kabu is incredibly humble. Not only that, he has a great appreciation for the trainers that come by his gym. He distinctly manages to recall the names of the main character and Hop when they return to Motostoke, something that somewhat surprises Hop, which could seem reasonable with the amount of challengers that partake in the gym challenge. One trainer could easily simply be another face that passes through his gym, and with the amount of trainers that are said to not be able to even beat Kabu once they reach his gym, those aren't even successful trainers, simply other loses and people whose Pokemon journey comes to an end. But Kabu remembers what it was like to be a struggling trainer. In his age comes experience, and having known what being at that point is like, he is always willing to offer encouragement to those who pass through his gym, and when someone with the right type of determination and skill to defeat him comes by, he makes an effort to keep their memory in his mind. Life is always full of new experiences, and not only is it his goal to go through as many of these experiences as he can while he is alive, as is said to be his motto, but he wants to be able to help push young trainers to do their best and live out their dreams, just the way he did when he'd been their age.
